LIVES IN / Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn
WORKS IN / Ridgewood, Queens
OCCUPATION / Artist
ON THE CLOCK / Start as early as I can, which is usually not early enough, bike to the studio -- about 20 minutes -- stop for coffee at AP on the way, and hit Utrecht or the hardware store if I’m low on materials. Paint through the afternoon and head to Chelsea in the evenings, where I make fancy cocktails and sell expensive food. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat.
YOUR ART WEEKEND / When I need a day off, I spend the day at the Met. It helps me clear my head -- those paint thinners are no joke. Usually I just wander the rooms until they kick me out, but there are two paintings I never miss: Cy Twombly’s Untitled (Rome)* and Jules Bastien-Lepage’s Joan of Arc. Epic.
ALBUM / Read & Burn EPs (1,2,3) by Wire -- they might get old, but these records don’t.
FILM / Pumping Iron -- Arnold Schwarzenegger and Lou Ferrigno -- How am I just seeing this now?
ARTIST / The Garden Project series by Kerry James Marshall has been in my head a lot lately.
BOOK / Night Studio: A Memoir of Philip Guston, by Musa Mayer
EATS / Mostly cook for myself these days, but I could never pass up a burger and a beer from Diner in Williamsburg. Those guys know what they’re doing.
LATEST PURCHASE / Six-foot by four-foot stretcher bars for a new canvas.
GUILTY PLEASURE / Kevin Costner films.
GRADE IN ART CLASS / C+ in Advanced Etching.
36 HOURS / Went to Burlington, VT a few months ago to see an old friend. She talked me into extending the trip and spending the weekend in Montreal. I hadn’t left New York since I moved here last year. It was an impromptu vacation, and it was just what I needed. (I did accidentally miss my train back, however. That was less cool.)
